SIB 51 15 17: Hood does not release properly

Hood does not release properly on BMW G30/G31/E60/F07 and other models (2017); BMW explains the cause and the approved repair.

BMW service bulletin · NHTSA ID 10146639 · Apr 2017 · also written SI B51 15 17, B511517

What it covers

A service bulletin tells BMW technicians how to diagnose or fix a known issue. It is not a recall: a repair under a bulletin is normally paid by the owner unless the car is still under warranty or a warranty extension applies.

HOOD DOES NOT RELEASE PROPERLY. Hood lever is pulled twice but the hood only achieves the pre-latch position on one side while the other is still latched. Downward pressure on the side of the hood that remains latched will release it to the pre-latch position.

Model, year and engine coverage comes from NHTSA's records. Not every car in this range is affected; the official document lists the exact production dates and conditions.

Before you pay, check the VIN for recalls. Some failures are covered by a safety recall or a BMW warranty extension.
