BMW recall check by VIN

Decode a VIN and see the safety recalls NHTSA lists for that model and year. Built for BMWs, works for any make.

We don't store or log the VIN you enter. It is sent once to NHTSA's public VIN decoder to look up the car.

What this check can and can't tell you

This tool decodes the VIN with NHTSA's public decoder (vPIC), then pulls every recall NHTSA has on file for that make, model and model year. So the results are by model and year, not by your exact car. A recall can cover only part of a model year, and a listed recall may already have been done on your car.

To see whether a recall is open or already completed on your specific VIN, use NHTSA's official VIN lookup, BMW USA's recall lookup, or call any BMW dealer's service department. Recall repairs are free at authorized dealers.

Data: U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (vPIC VIN decoder and the recalls API). BimmerBench is not affiliated with NHTSA or BMW.

Recall vs warranty extension

A recall covers a safety defect or an emissions or safety-standard problem, and the fix is free. Automakers also run non-safety warranty extensions and service campaigns that don't always show up in NHTSA's recall data, so it's worth asking the dealer about those too. Then see what common repairs cost on our repair price table.
