SIB 51 17 21: Tailgate humming noise

Tailgate humming noise on BMW G05/G07 models (2019–2021); BMW explains the cause and the approved repair.

BMW service bulletin · NHTSA ID 10201143 · Jul 2021 · also written SI B51 17 21, B511721

What it covers

A service bulletin tells BMW technicians how to diagnose or fix a known issue. It is not a recall: a repair under a bulletin is normally paid by the owner unless the car is still under warranty or a warranty extension applies.

The tailgate will not completely open and will not close completely. In most cases, the tailgate will release and open only a short distance before stopping. In some situations, a humming noise can be heard, but no activation can be seen.
