Gear selector display position changes from n to r on S85 engines (2007); BMW explains the cause and the approved repair.

BMW service bulletin · NHTSA ID 10026827 · Jun 2008 · also written SI B25 01 08, B250108

What it covers

A service bulletin tells BMW technicians how to diagnose or fix a known issue. It is not a recall: a repair under a bulletin is normally paid by the owner unless the car is still under warranty or a warranty extension applies.

Gear selector display position changes from n to r. When engine is turned off with the gear selector in position n , the gear indicator in the instrument cluster intermittently changes to reverse r (with transmission gear engagement) for approximately 15 seconds before returning to n.
