SIB 54 02 17: Convertible top failure

Convertible top failure on BMW F32/F33/F36/F82 and other models (2014–2016); BMW released a software update.

BMW service bulletin · NHTSA ID 10146643 · Apr 2017 · also written SI B54 02 17, B540217

What it covers

A service bulletin tells BMW technicians how to diagnose or fix a known issue. It is not a recall: a repair under a bulletin is normally paid by the owner unless the car is still under warranty or a warranty extension applies.

SERVICE ACTION: IMPLAUSIBLE SENSOR SIGNALS IN CONVERTIBLE ROOF SYSTEM. Signals from sensors in luggage compartment are being misinterpreted by the convertible top control module (CVM). This may lead to failure of the system to detect obstructions and cause damage to the hydraulics.
