BMW P1290 and 123401: electric wastegate cold start not learned

The engine computer couldn't learn the end positions of the electric wastegate actuator on a cold start. Check the linkage and actuator; on some B-series engines BMW traced it to wiring interference.

P-codes are the generic OBD-II codes any reader shows. Six-character and four-character hex codes are BMW's own, read with a BMW-capable scanner; the wording is BMW's, from the source shown.

What it means

Turbo engines with an electric wastegate (N20, N26, B46, B48, B58 and others) teach the actuator's open and closed stops at cold start. If that fails, the DME stores 123401 (often shown as P1290 on generic tools) and may limit power with the emissions light on.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, usually in reduced power. Drivable, but boost may be limited until it's fixed. A rattle from the turbo area suggests worn linkage.

A bulletin isn't a recall and doesn't mean your car has the problem; open it for the exact models and build dates.

What to do

  1. Ask the shop to check linkage free play and run the wastegate adaptation before replacing the actuator.
  2. If your car is a 2016-or-earlier B46/B48/B58, ask about BMW's wiring bulletin.
