Model-year changes
| Model year | What changed |
|---|---|
| Context | The E65/E66 launched in 2001 (long-wheelbase Li from 2002) with V8s and the V12 760i/760Li, and was replaced by the F01 in late 2008.5 |
| 2006 | US lineup in the EPA listings: 4.8L 8-cyl: 750i, 750li; 6.0L 12-cyl: 760i, 760li.6 |
| 2007 | No longer listed: 760i.6 |
US model years unless noted. "LCI" (Life Cycle Impulse) is BMW's name for a mid-cycle facelift.
Known problems and when they show up
Mileages are what the cited shops, specialists and owner forums report. They are typical ranges, not predictions for any one car.
N62 engine
750i / 750Li (2006–2008), Alpina B7 (2007–2008)
| Problem | When it shows up | What to know | Repair prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve stem seals | often at high mileage; owner reports vary widely | Blue smoke after a cold start or long idle, high oil use. Check the CCV first because it can mimic seal failure.1 | No price yet |
| Alternator bracket gasket | age | An oil leak into the valley. The gasket is cheap but the labor is not.1 | No price yet |
| Coolant transfer pipe (valley) | age | Coolant from the rear weep hole. Fixes include the BimmerFix stent or the AGA collapsible pipe.1 | No price yet |
N73 engine
760i / 760Li (2006–2008)
| Problem | When it shows up | What to know | Repair prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-pressure fuel pumps (two, one per bank) | any mileage | The most-reported N73 fault: a pump diaphragm or seal leaks internally, causing misfires, rough running or no-start. Each bank has its own pump, and replacements are dealer parts and expensive.2,3 | No price yet |
| Coolant transfer pipe seal | from about 40,000 miles | The pipe runs in the valley under the intake into the front timing cover; when its front seal hardens, coolant weeps from a hole next to the water pump. The factory repair needs major disassembly; aftermarket kits go in through the water pump opening. A seller topping up coolant is a warning sign.4,2,3 | No price yet |
| Hydraulic engine mounts | higher mileage | A technician reports the mounts commonly leak their fluid on the V12, which shows as vibration at idle.2 | No price yet |
| Alternator bracket oil leak | higher mileage | The alternator bracket gasket leaks oil, as on the N62 V8.3 | No price yet |
| Crankcase breather hoses and rail pressure sensors | higher mileage | The breather hoses become oil-soaked and need replacing; rail pressure sensors are a repeat repair.2 | No price yet |
| Carbon build-up on intake valves | high mileage | Direct injection means carbon builds on the intake valves over time. Injectors occasionally fail but are considered more reliable than those of the N54 and N63.2 | No price yet |

Test drive and inspection checklist
- Run the VIN for open recalls. Open safety recalls are free at any BMW dealer. Check on NHTSA's site or our recall page before you buy.7
- Scan for stored fault codes with a BMW-capable tool. A generic OBD reader misses most BMW modules. Specialist guides recommend a BMW-level scan (ISTA or similar) to catch faults that have been cleared from the dash but still stored.8,9
- Start it from cold. Ask the seller not to warm the car up first. Chain rattle, VANOS rattle, lifter tick and rough idle show most clearly in the first seconds after a cold start.8,10,11
- Ask a BMW dealer about warranty extensions and campaigns. Several BMW warranty extensions follow the car, not the owner, and some reimburse earlier repairs. A dealer can check the VIN. The list for this chassis is below.
- Get a pre-purchase inspection from a BMW specialist. A few hundred dollars for an independent BMW specialist is the usual advice, especially for M cars and high-mileage turbo engines.12,8
Engine items to listen and look for are in the known problems section.
Service-history red flags
- Oil changes only at the long computer interval. Several guides advise changing oil more often than the onboard service indicator (CBS) suggests, especially with lots of city driving.11,13
- Gaps in the records around known failure mileages. If the engine section below lists a job that usually comes due at the car's mileage, ask for the invoice. A missing record isn't proof it wasn't done, but it is a negotiating point.
- Tuned or "deleted" cars. Tunes, emissions deletes and removed parts complicate warranty claims and inspections and raise wear on turbo cars. Ask, and look for aftermarket intakes, downpipes and charge pipes.
- N62: ask for records of Valve stem seals; Alternator bracket gasket; Coolant transfer pipe (valley).
- N73: ask for records of High-pressure fuel pumps (two, one per bank); Coolant transfer pipe seal; Hydraulic engine mounts; Alternator bracket oil leak; Crankcase breather hoses and rail pressure sensors; Carbon build-up on intake valves.
