BMW 2A15, 2A17 and 2A19: fuel tank leak test and vent valve codes
Codes from the fuel vapour system on E-series BMWs. 2A15 is a small leak; 2A17 is the leak-test pump itself; 2A19 is the purge valve circuit.

P-codes are the generic OBD-II codes any reader shows. Six-character and four-character hex codes are BMW's own, read with a BMW-capable scanner; the wording is BMW's, from the source shown.
What it means
Many E-series cars test the fuel vapour system with a DMTL leak-test pump. 2A15 means the test found a fine leak (on a generic reader, typically an EVAP small-leak code like P0456). 2A17 means the DMTL pump failed its own check. 2A19 is an electrical fault in the tank venting (purge) valve circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Yes. These faults don't affect how the car drives, but the check engine light stays on until it's fixed.
Usual causes on BMWs
| Cause | Cars most affected | What you notice | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine leak: cap, lines, canister, seals | E-series | 2A15. BMW lists it among codes that should always be diagnosed with the test plan. | BMW SI B07 03 14 |
| DMTL pump failure | N52K cars, including E70 X5 3.0si/xDrive30i (2007–2009 builds) and others listed in the bulletin | 2A17, often with 2B3A–2B3D. BMW extended DMTL pump coverage to 10 years or 120,000 miles on eligible cars and told technicians to replace the pump directly for those codes. | SI B01 05 11 (PDF) |
| Purge valve or its wiring | E-series | 2A19 output stage fault: the valve, its connector or wiring. | CarWiki |
A bulletin isn't a recall and doesn't mean your car has the problem; open it for the exact models and build dates.
What to do
- Check the fuel cap first.
- For 2A17 on an N52K car, ask a BMW center whether the DMTL warranty extension still applies to your VIN.
- Have the leak test run with a smoke machine before replacing parts.
