How BMW schedules maintenance
BMWs use condition-based service: the car tracks time, distance and driving conditions and shows what's due in the instrument cluster or iDrive. Some items (cabin filter, air filter, spark plugs, key battery) aren't shown on their own; BMW ties them to a numbered oil service, so the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th oil services carry extra work. The intervals above come from the BMW USA maintenance booklet and are approximate; your car's display and its own maintenance booklet are the authority, and older model years can differ.
New BMWs include BMW Ultimate Care scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles. BMW USA also lists a $249 three-year oil and filter plan for cars past 60 months or 60,000 miles without a maintenance plan, at participating dealers. Cars from about 3 years old can get the fixed-price BMW Value Service menu.
