SIB 61 06 12: Steering fault codes

Steering fault codes on BMW E65/E66 models (2006–2008); BMW gives an inspection and repair procedure.

BMW service bulletin · NHTSA ID 10043714 · Feb 2012 · also written SI B61 06 12, B610612

What it covers

A service bulletin tells BMW technicians how to diagnose or fix a known issue. It is not a recall: a repair under a bulletin is normally paid by the owner unless the car is still under warranty or a warranty extension applies.

Steering column switch center contains one or more faults: Internal control, steering wheel lock range exceeded, wiper angle defective. Various check control messages appear with airbag warning lamp illuminated.

Model, year and engine coverage comes from NHTSA's records. Not every car in this range is affected; the official document lists the exact production dates and conditions.

Before you pay, check the VIN for recalls. Some failures are covered by a safety recall or a BMW warranty extension.
