Symptoms
- Clunk from the rear on throttle or when shifting
- Cracks in the floor around the rear subframe mounting points
- Rear wheel alignment that won't stay in spec
- Visible movement at the subframe mounts
Which cars are affected
1999–2006 E46. The prices we found are all from E46 M3 owners, whose cars are the best-known for cracks around the rear subframe mounts.
Reinforcement means dropping the rear subframe and welding plates into the floor at the mounts. Many shops also replace the subframe and differential bushings at the same time, which raises the price. Ask whether a quote includes bushings, rust repair and coating.
