Symptoms

- Lean fault codes (P0171 / P0174)
- Oil smoke at startup or oil in the intake tube
- Oil leaks pushed out past the valve cover or oil filter housing gaskets
- Suction on the oil filler cap with the engine running
Which cars are affected
2001–2006 E46 325i/325xi/325Ci/330i/330xi/330Ci (M54) and 1999–2000 323i/328i (M52TU). The same M54 system is in the E39 525i/530i, E83 X3 and E53 X5 3.0i.
On the M54 the CCV valve and its hoses sit under the intake manifold, so the intake comes off for the job. Shops often suggest doing the DISA valve, intake gaskets or oil filter housing gasket at the same time. Check whether a quote includes those.
