Which cars are affected
1999–2006 E46 323i/328i (M52TU) and 325i/325xi/325Ci/330i/330xi/330Ci (M54).
The gasket sits between the oil filter housing and the block. Oil from it can soak the drive belt, so it shouldn't be left. Shops often replace the belt or the valve cover gasket at the same visit; check what a quote includes.
