Grey rows are shown for context and left out of the range. Years are approximate (date of the post). The range is the middle half of full-job USD prices for each shop type, published once there are at least 3; labor-only, customer-supplied-parts, warranty cost-share and bundled jobs are listed but left out.

Symptoms

  • Usually none until damage is done: the job is done as prevention
  • Copper or bearing material in oil analysis
  • Knocking from the bottom of the engine, worst when warm
  • Low oil pressure warning

Which cars are affected

2008–2013 E90 M3 sedan, E92 M3 coupe and E93 M3 convertible with the S65 V8. Most owners treat it as preventive maintenance.

The rod bearings come out from below with the oil pan off, so most shops also replace the engine mounts, oil pan gasket and oil. Quotes differ mostly by bearing brand (OEM, BE Bearings, ACL or WPC-treated), new ARP rod bolts and whether mounts and fluids are included. Compare quotes line by line.
