What it means

The car's stability systems (DSC, the xDrive transfer case control and, where fitted, adaptive or air suspension) have stored a fault and some of their help may be off. BMW's older wording for the same idea is "Drive control system! Driving stability control system failed. Reduced driving stability when cornering. Drive carefully." The warning often appears together with "Drivetrain malfunction" when the real fault is in the engine or gearbox, because DSC needs good data from them.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, carefully. Brakes still work, but stability help may be reduced or off. Drive gently, leave more room, avoid hard cornering and be careful in rain or snow. If a red brake warning or "Brake fluid" message appears, stop: that is a different, more serious warning.

This is general guidance. Your owner's manual has the exact instruction for your car, and any red warning means stop as soon as it is safe.

Bulletins are BMW service information filed with NHTSA; open one for the exact models, build dates and repair. A bulletin isn't a recall and doesn't mean your car has the problem.

What to do

  1. Check for other messages shown at the same time and note them.
  2. Switch off, wait a few minutes and restart; if it returns, have all modules scanned, not just the engine.
  3. If it came on after new tires, a wheel change or an alignment, mention that to the shop: mismatched tire sizes or a steering angle that needs calibrating can trigger stability faults.
