What it means

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) includes ABS, traction control and brake assist. BMW's E90 wording for a DSC fault is "DSC failed! Restricted driving stability when accelerating and cornering. Drive carefully." A combined fault reads "Control systems! Brake and driving control systems failure. Reduced braking and driving stability. Avoid braking abruptly if possible." Low brake fluid gives "Brake fluid! Insufficient brake fluid. Braking effect reduced. Stop carefully."

Can I keep driving?

Yellow DSC/ABS: carefully. Red brake fluid/brake system: stop. With a yellow DSC or ABS warning the normal brakes still work, but wheels can lock or spin, so brake earlier and gently. A red brake warning or low brake fluid message means braking may be reduced: stop carefully and get help.

This is general guidance. Your owner's manual has the exact instruction for your car, and any red warning means stop as soon as it is safe.

Bulletins are BMW service information filed with NHTSA; open one for the exact models, build dates and repair. A bulletin isn't a recall and doesn't mean your car has the problem.

What to do

  1. If the red brake warning is on, don't keep driving; check whether the parking brake is fully released first.
  2. Have DSC fault memory read; it names which wheel sensor or unit has the fault.
  3. Check for open recalls and service actions on your VIN before paying for a DSC unit.
