Symptoms
- Loss of low-end torque and a flat spot below about 3,000 rpm
- Rough idle or hesitation when the engine is warm
- Rattle from the front of the engine
- Camshaft position or VANOS fault codes
Which cars are affected
1999–2006 E46 with the M52TU or M54 double-VANOS six (323i/328i, 325i/325xi/325Ci, 330i/330xi/330Ci). The same unit is on the E39 and E53/E83 sixes.
The VANOS unit's piston seals harden with age. The usual fix is a seal kit fitted to the existing unit; some shops sell a rebuilt unit instead. Few public prices exist for this job, so treat the figures below as examples, not a range.
