What it means

BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) tracks each maintenance item separately: engine oil, front and rear brakes, brake fluid, a vehicle check and, depending on the car, other items listed in your owner's manual. When one comes due, the car shows "Service due" and the item. The menu shows the remaining time or distance for each.

Can I keep driving?

Yes. It's a reminder, not a fault. Book the item it names. An overdue oil service is the one not to put off.

This is general guidance. Your owner's manual has the exact instruction for your car, and any red warning means stop as soon as it is safe.

Engine oil serviceAllBased on oil condition, distance and time.—
Brake pads and brake fluidAllPads from the wear sensors; fluid by date.—

Bulletins are BMW service information filed with NHTSA; open one for the exact models, build dates and repair. A bulletin isn't a recall and doesn't mean your car has the problem.

What to do

  1. Open the service menu to see which item is due.
  2. See our maintenance schedules and BMW Value Service prices for typical costs.
  3. Make sure whoever does the work resets that CBS item afterwards.
