It lists F01/F02/F04/F07 to 6/2012, F10 to 7/2013, F12/F13 to 7/2012, E70 to 6/2013, E71 to 6/2014 and E72. Ask a dealer whether the VIN has had it.15No price yet
Turbo coolant lines, valve cover gaskets and timing chaincommonly 70,000+ milesThe heat of the "hot vee" layout ages rubber and plastic parts. Known F15 issues beyond the engine

Owner-reported problems. Driving.ca lists engine oil leaks, high oil consumption (especially the V8), EGR cooler leaks on the diesel, battery drains causing no-starts, power tailgate failures and reverse camera glitches.18

Reliability by year. Driving.ca, citing Consumer Reports, says most model years scored 32–42 out of 100, with 2017 the standout at 72. Suspension and steering scored lowest.18

Rear air springs (self-leveling). Cars with rear self-leveling air suspension can need new air springs (see our job page).

  • Recall 21V907: fuel system, diesel 328D, 535D, 740LD, X3, X5, 2014–2018. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.
  • Recall 21V586: high-pressure fuel pump 328D, 535D, 740LD, X3, X5, 2014–2018. The high-pressure fuel pump may fail.
  • Recall 18V755: gas recirculation valve (EGR valve) 328D, 535D, 740LD, X3, X5, 2014–2018. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot.
  • Recall 18V652: electrical 330E, 530E, 740LE, I3, I8, X5, 2018–2019. Capacitors within the TurboCord Portable Chargers may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or a fire.

Test drive and inspection checklist

  1. Run the VIN for open recalls. Open safety recalls are free at any BMW dealer. Check on NHTSA's site or our recall page before you buy.19
  2. Scan for stored fault codes with a BMW-capable tool. A generic OBD reader misses most BMW modules. Specialist guides recommend a BMW-level scan (ISTA or similar) to catch faults that have been cleared from the dash but still stored.20,21
  3. Start it from cold. Ask the seller not to warm the car up first. Chain rattle, VANOS rattle, lifter tick and rough idle show most clearly in the first seconds after a cold start.20,22,23
  4. Ask a BMW dealer about warranty extensions and campaigns. Several BMW warranty extensions follow the car, not the owner, and some reimburse earlier repairs. A dealer can check the VIN. The list for this chassis is below.
  5. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a BMW specialist. A few hundred dollars for an independent BMW specialist is the usual advice, especially for M cars and high-mileage turbo engines.24,20
  6. Rear ride height and compressor. Check that the rear sits level after standing.
  7. Tailgate, camera and battery. Run the power tailgate and cameras, and ask about no-start history.18
  8. 35d: EGR cooler. BMW has extended coverage on EGR coolers and valves on F15 diesels (see the warranty list).

Engine items to listen and look for are in the known problems section.

Service-history red flags

  • Oil changes only at the long computer interval. Several guides advise changing oil more often than the onboard service indicator (CBS) suggests, especially with lots of city driving.23,25
  • Gaps in the records around known failure mileages. If the engine section below lists a job that usually comes due at the car's mileage, ask for the invoice. A missing record isn't proof it wasn't done, but it is a negotiating point.
  • Tuned or "deleted" cars. Tunes, emissions deletes and removed parts complicate warranty claims and inspections and raise wear on turbo cars. Ask, and look for aftermarket intakes, downpipes and charge pipes.
  • N55: ask for records of Valve cover and gasket leak; Oil filter housing gasket leak; Electric water pump and thermostat; Plastic charge pipe; Oil pan gasket; VANOS solenoids.
  • N57: ask for records of EGR cooler and valve, intake carbon, DPF; Timing chain; EGR cooler coolant leaks (recalls 18V-755 and 21V-907); Diesel emissions parts (DEF, NOx sensors, particulate filter).
  • N20: ask for records of Timing chain guides and oil pump drive chain; Oil leaks and electric water pump.
  • N63: ask for records of Oil consumption and valve stem seals; N63 Customer Care Package items; Turbo coolant lines, valve cover gaskets and timing chain.

Which F15 to look for

xDrive35i, ideally 2017. Driving.ca points to the six-cylinder 35i for lower running costs and to 2017 for its reliability rating. It notes the 40e's electric range was small even when new.18

These are the views of the cited reviewers and specialists, not a ranking of our own.

F15 specs

BMW's US figures we have on file run from 255 hp (X5 xDrive35d) to 445 hp (X5 xDrive50i), with 0-60 mph as quick as 4.7 s.
