Symptoms
- Vibration on startup or at idle, felt in the cabin
- A thump when the engine starts, or thumping when you accelerate
- Engine visibly moves or rocks when revved
- Clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse
- Mounts leaking hydraulic fluid (often found at an inspection before there are any symptoms)
- Grinding or scraping noises if a failed mount is left too long
Which cars are affected
G20 330i / 330i xDrive (2019+) and G22 coupe, G23 convertible, G26 Gran Coupe 430i / 430i xDrive (2021+). Genuine mounts: 330i RWD, 430i and 430i xDrive coupe use left 22117581617 and right 22117581618; 330i xDrive and 430i xDrive Gran Coupe use 22117581621 / 22117581622. Confirm by VIN.
Both engine mounts are normally replaced together. The mounts are fluid-filled, and a dealer inspection often flags a leak before the car shows symptoms; some owners choose to wait until there is vibration or a thump. The mount bolts are one-time use, so new hardware is part of the job. xDrive cars use different mounts. Labor time: BMW warranty labor time not yet available for this job.

- Tools you'll need
- Engine support: a support bar, or a jack with a wood block under the oil pan
- Long extensions, E-Torx/Torx sockets and a torque wrench
- New mount bolts (the old ones are one-time use)
- A helper to push the engine over while the old mount comes out
- What it involves
- Support the engine, raise it slightly, unbolt the left and right mounts and fit the new ones with new bolts. Owners report about 2 hours with a helper.
- Risks and when to use a shop
- Work only with the engine securely supported. Some owners say the front subframe has to be lowered, which makes it a bigger job. The bolts cannot be reused. xDrive cars take different mounts, so order by VIN. If you are not comfortable supporting an engine, use a shop.
