Model-year changes

Model yearWhat changed
2004–2005Launch with the 525i/530i (M54) and 545i (N62 V8). From MY2006 the N52 replaces the M54 in the 525i/530i, and the 550i (N62, 4.8 L, 360 hp) replaces the 545i.11,12
2008 (LCI)Facelift (production from March 2007). Revised lights and bumpers, a heavily revised interior, an electronic "shift-by-wire" selector, and a faster Steptronic with an optional Sport Automatic on the 535i/550i. The 528i (N52, 230 hp) and 535i (N54 twin-turbo, 300 hp) replace the 525i and 530i. xDrive versions of the 528i and 535i, plus a 535xi Sports Wagon.13,11
2009–2010iDrive gains programmable favorite buttons. Last model year 2010; replaced by the F10.11

US model years unless noted. "LCI" (Life Cycle Impulse) is BMW's name for a mid-cycle facelift.

ProblemWhen it shows upWhat to knowRepair prices
Electric water pump and thermostatabout 60,000–100,000 miles; failures before 50,000 are reportedThe electric pump usually fails without warning and the engine overheats quickly. Specialists suggest replacing the thermostat with it.4,5,6No price yet
High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP)any mileage; most common on early carsLong cranks, stumbling and stalling. BMW extended HPFP coverage to 10 years/120,000 miles on 2007–2010 N54 cars, and later pumps are more reliable. That extension has expired on almost all cars by age.4,5N54 high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) replacement

Known E60 issues beyond the engine

Water in the cabin from blocked drains. Blocked scuttle (cowl) drains can overflow and soak the front carpets and the control units under them. Clearing them takes about an hour.12

ZF 6HP automatic: oil pan leaks and harsh shifts. The plastic pan, which includes the filter, can warp and leak. Harsh shifting can mean the valve body (mechatronics) needs a rebuild. The fluid is "sealed for life" but shouldn't be neglected.12

Dynamic Drive (active anti-roll bars), Active Steering and SMG. Drive-My suggests avoiding these options: active roll bar leaks are expensive, and SMG pumps and controllers are troublesome.12

Battery coding. The E60's battery sensor (IBS) manages charging. A replacement battery must be the correct type and registered or coded, or electrical systems start shutting down.12

Wagon (E61): tailgate wiring and panoramic roof. Broken tailgate wiring causes odd electrical faults. The panoramic roof can leak and rattle.12

Test drive and inspection checklist

  1. Run the VIN for open recalls. Open safety recalls are free at any BMW dealer. Check on NHTSA's site or our recall page before you buy.14
  2. Scan for stored fault codes with a BMW-capable tool. A generic OBD reader misses most BMW modules. Specialist guides recommend a BMW-level scan (ISTA or similar) to catch faults that have been cleared from the dash but still stored.15,9
  3. Start it from cold. Ask the seller not to warm the car up first. Chain rattle, VANOS rattle, lifter tick and rough idle show most clearly in the first seconds after a cold start.15,16,17
  4. Ask a BMW dealer about warranty extensions and campaigns. Several BMW warranty extensions follow the car, not the owner, and some reimburse earlier repairs. A dealer can check the VIN. The list for this chassis is below.
  5. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a BMW specialist. A few hundred dollars for an independent BMW specialist is the usual advice, especially for M cars and high-mileage turbo engines.18,15
  6. Lift the front carpets and check for damp. A wet footwell points to blocked drains and possible module damage.12
  7. Check every electrical function and iDrive. Including the DVD navigation, lights and the iDrive controller.12
  8. Look under the trays for rust on seams and brake lines. Body rust is rare on the E60 unless it has been in an accident; rear brake lines can rust.12

Engine items to listen and look for are in the known problems section.

Service-history red flags

  • Oil changes only at the long computer interval. Several guides advise changing oil more often than the onboard service indicator (CBS) suggests, especially with lots of city driving.17,12
  • Gaps in the records around known failure mileages. If the engine section below lists a job that usually comes due at the car's mileage, ask for the invoice. A missing record isn't proof it wasn't done, but it is a negotiating point.
  • Tuned or "deleted" cars. Tunes, emissions deletes and removed parts complicate warranty claims and inspections and raise wear on turbo cars. Ask, and look for aftermarket intakes, downpipes and charge pipes.
  • N52: ask for records of Electric water pump and thermostat; VANOS solenoids; Hydraulic lifter tick; Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks.
  • N54: ask for records of Electric water pump and thermostat; High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP); Piezo fuel injectors; Turbo wastegate rattle; Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks; VANOS solenoids.
  • N62: ask for records of Valve stem seals; Alternator bracket gasket; Coolant transfer pipe (valley).
  • S85: ask for records of Rod bearings; Throttle actuators; SMG III hydraulic pump and clutch; VANOS oil pump, VANOS wear and oil consumption.

Which E60 to look for

Simplest: 528i (N52). Drive-My says later N52 cars are fine if looked after. It advises avoiding SMG, Active Steering and Dynamic Drive. The 535i (N54) adds the fuel-pump and injector issues covered below.12

These are the views of the cited reviewers and specialists, not a ranking of our own.
