Model-year changes

Model yearWhat changed
2006Final E46 year in the US: the coupe ended in May 2006 and the convertible in November 2006. US 2006 models: 325Ci and 330Ci convertibles (M54) and the M3 coupe and convertible (S54, six-speed manual or SMG II).6

US model years unless noted. "LCI" (Life Cycle Impulse) is BMW's name for a mid-cycle facelift.

Known problems and when they show up

Mileages are what the cited shops, specialists and owner forums report. They are typical ranges, not predictions for any one car.

ProblemWhen it shows upWhat to knowRepair prices
Rod bearings (pre-2003 cars)early cars: check the recall; many owners treat later bearings as a wear itemRoad & Track says BMW recalled 2001–2003 model-year M3s because the rod bearings were incorrectly sized. Classics World advises checking the history for proof the bearing fix was done on pre-2003 cars.4,5No price yet
VANOS rattleage and mileageClassics World says the S54 is not especially prone to VANOS trouble, but specialists can rebuild a rattling unit.5No price yet
Rear subframe mount cracking (E46 chassis)age and power relatedCracks can hide under the car. Have a specialist inspect it, and ask whether reinforcement was done.4,5,2No price yet
SMG II hydraulic pumpageThe hydraulic pump can cause gear-selection problems, and clutch wear and judder are reported. Most buyers prefer the six-speed manual.4,5No price yet
Limited-slip differential noiseanyThe diff can groan in tight turns. Fresh fluid with the right friction modifier can help; also check the shaft seals for leaks.5No price yet

Known E46 issues beyond the engine

Rear subframe mount cracking. Affects every E46 year and model. The sheet-metal floor around the rear subframe mounts cracks, often with few symptoms beyond clunks or creaks from the rear.2

Cooling system. Expansion tanks crack and water pumps fail. Thermostats and belt pulleys tend to fail around 60,000–75,000 miles.2

DISA valve. Typically good for about 75,000–100,000 miles. On M54 engines the whole unit usually needs replacing.2

Rust. Mostly cosmetic, but the rear subframe mounting points can rust structurally.2

Warranty extensions and service campaigns 6

Warranty extensions (6)

Filed by BMW with NHTSA. Extensions usually follow the car to later owners and can reimburse earlier repairs; a BMW dealer can confirm by VIN.

Test drive and inspection checklist

  1. Run the VIN for open recalls. Open safety recalls are free at any BMW dealer. Check on NHTSA's site or our recall page before you buy.7
  2. Scan for stored fault codes with a BMW-capable tool. A generic OBD reader misses most BMW modules. Specialist guides recommend a BMW-level scan (ISTA or similar) to catch faults that have been cleared from the dash but still stored.8,9
  3. Start it from cold. Ask the seller not to warm the car up first. Chain rattle, VANOS rattle, lifter tick and rough idle show most clearly in the first seconds after a cold start.8,10,11
  4. Ask a BMW dealer about warranty extensions and campaigns. Several BMW warranty extensions follow the car, not the owner, and some reimburse earlier repairs. A dealer can check the VIN. The list for this chassis is below.
  5. Get a pre-purchase inspection from a BMW specialist. A few hundred dollars for an independent BMW specialist is the usual advice, especially for M cars and high-mileage turbo engines.4,8
  6. Inspect the rear subframe mounts. Look for visible cracks around the mounts under the trunk floor and listen for rear clunks.2
  7. Cooling system records. A full cooling refresh at 60,000–75,000 miles is recommended.2

Engine items to listen and look for are in the known problems section.

Service-history red flags

  • Oil changes only at the long computer interval. Several guides advise changing oil more often than the onboard service indicator (CBS) suggests, especially with lots of city driving.11,12
  • Gaps in the records around known failure mileages. If the engine section below lists a job that usually comes due at the car's mileage, ask for the invoice. A missing record isn't proof it wasn't done, but it is a negotiating point.
  • Tuned or "deleted" cars. Tunes, emissions deletes and removed parts complicate warranty claims and inspections and raise wear on turbo cars. Ask, and look for aftermarket intakes, downpipes and charge pipes.
  • M54: ask for records of Cooling system (water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, hoses, radiator); CCV (crankcase ventilation); Valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket and DISA valve; Oil pump nut.
  • S54: ask for records of Rod bearings (pre-2003 cars); VANOS rattle; Rear subframe mount cracking (E46 chassis); SMG II hydraulic pump; Limited-slip differential noise.
