Cooling system wear (water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, hoses)
The plastic-heavy cooling system on these older inline sixes ages out: pumps, thermostats, the expansion tank and radiator necks are the usual leak and overheating points.

Crankcase ventilation (CCV) valve and hoses
A clogged or cracked CCV system can cause rough idle, lean codes, a whistle at idle and oil use, and can push oil past gaskets.

Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks
Age-hardened gaskets seep oil onto the exhaust or belts; a burning-oil smell is the usual first sign.

Electric water pump and thermostat failure
The N52 introduced BMW's electric coolant pump. When the pump or thermostat fails the car shows a coolant temperature warning and can go into reduced power.

Oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks
The two classic N5x oil leaks. Oil from the filter housing gasket can reach the drive belt, so it shouldn't be left.

VANOS solenoids and lifter tick
Dirty or failing VANOS solenoids cause rough idle and timing codes; hydraulic lifters can tick on cold starts.
